Conclusion
The Voigtlander 110mm F2.5 Macro APO Lanthar is a stunningly sharp macro lens that offers true 1:1 magnification and a useful working distance from your subject. Boasting the same stellar build quality that we've come to expect from recent Voigtlander lenses, this new optic is a real gem.
The 35cm minimum focusing distance and 1:1 magnification ratio obviously makes this lens versatile enough to shoot very close subjects, with the combination of the outstanding sharpness and a high-resolution camera like the Sony A7R III capable of delivering some breath-taking levels of fine detail. Note that this lens uses a classic extending design, though, measuring 6cms more when set to its closest focusing distance than at infinity.
Shooting wide-open at the maximum f/2.5 aperture shows very little reduction in sharpness in the centre of the frame, and even at the edges performance is excellent throughout most of the aperture range. The Voigtlander 110mm F2.5 Macro APO Lanthar is also as good a performer at infinity as at its closest focusing distance. You certainly won't be complaining about the sharpness of this lens!
The Voigtlander 110mm F2.5 Macro APO Lanthar is fully compatible with the Sony Alpha Peaking and Manual Focus Assist features, which are excellent aids to delivering a higher percentage of keepers than might reasonably be expected. It also supports 5-axis image stabilisation on compatible Sony cameras, which makes hand-held macro photography more viable than you might imagine, although for best results using a tripod or other support is recommended.
This lens' most natural rival is the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS, a similarly priced auto-focus macro lens with built-in OIS and weather-proofing. The Voigtlander 110mm F2.5 Macro APO Lanthar is much nicer to manually focus with, though, and is better built and ever so slightly quicker in terms of aperture.
All in all, we're very impressed by the Voigtlander 110mm F2.5 Macro APO Lanthar, especially when you consider that it only costs £849 / $1099.
