Steves Digicams have reviewed the Fujifilm Z10fd, a 7.2 megapixel digital camera with a a 3x optical zoom lens and 2.5” LCD screen.

“The Fuji FinePix Z10fd offers a nice combination of style and technology that really appeals to the younger, on the go, generation of photographers. The ultra-compact model is incredibly easy to use, and with the full auto mode, anyone can slide the camera open and start taking nice pictures. There are also several more advanced features for the novice or more creative photographer. With a street price of US$199 or less, we feel with its style, performance and image quality, the Z10fd will be a popular model this year.”

Sigma have published a selection of sample images taken with the Sigma DP1 compact camera. There are no less than 37 full-size JPEG images available to download, although unfortunately all of them are shot at ISO 100, so you can’t judge how good the DP1 is going to be in low-light. The DP1 will cost £549.99 in the UK, or £599.99 as a kit with the optical viewfinder and will be available in the UK from April. The Sigma DP1 is available for pre-order at Amazon for $800.

The new Sony Cyber-shot W300 is a new 13.6 megapixel digital camera with a scratch-resistant titanium coating. The Sony W300 offers a fastest ISO speed of 6400, Super SteadyShot image stabilisation and Clear RAW Noise Reduction. A 3x optical zoom lens, 2.7 inch LCD screen, Smile Shutter and Face Detection and HD output round-off the specification. The Sony Cyber-shot W300 will be available throughout Europe from early May for about $350.

The Sony Cyber-shot H50 is a new 15x ultra-zoom digital camera. The Sony H50 offers a 9 megapixel sensor, large 3 inch LCD screen that tilts up or down, and Enhanced Face Detection and Smile Shutter modes. To help combat camera shake, the Cyber-shot H50 incorporates ISO 3200 and an optical image stabilisation system. The Sony Cyber-shot H50 digital camera will be available from early May for about $400.

TrustedReviews have reviewed the 7.2 megapixel Casio EX-Z77 camera, which features a special YouTube mode that saves movies at the optimum size, quality and other settings.

“Unfortunately the Z77 does have one major weakness, and that is its final image quality. It’s “only” a 7.2-megapixel model, so it’s not going to be able to match more powerful rivals for total resolution, but its main problem its lens quality. The ultra-compact folding lens suffers from significant barrel distortion at the wide-angle end, and pincushion distortion at the telephoto end, but it is overall sharpness that is the real problem. It’s not too bad in the centre of the frame, but it gets very soft toward the edges, and also suffers from some chromatic aberration. Image noise isn’t too much of a problem, mainly because the Z77 is limited to a maximum of 800 ISO. At the lowest setting images are nice and clean, but above 200 ISO noise does become very noticeable.”

TrustedReviews have tested the new 8 megapixel Samsung NV8 digital camera.

“For what is practically a budget price the Samsung NV8 provides a level of quality on a par with premium-range cameras from any of the other manufacturers. It has a lot of style, excellent build quality, fast performance and a range of useful and entertaining features, made more accessible by the clever Smart Touch control system. It lacks a little in the picture quality department due to its image noise problems, but makes up for this somewhat with good low-light performance.”

CameraLabs have reviewed the new Canon S5 IS ultra-zoom compact camera, which features a 12x optical zoom lens equivalent to 36-432mm, optical image stabilizer and 8 megapixel sensor.

“The PowerShot S5 IS is certainly a powerful super-zoom camera with some neat features. The 12x range gives you decent coverage, the stabilisation is effective, the flip-out screen allows for unusual angles, the movie options are some of the best around on a still camera, and the literal icing on the cake is the hotshoe, supporting external flashguns.”

Neocamera have reviewed the Canon A720 IS digital camera, which offers 8 megapixels and optical image stabilization.

“Image quality is the most important aspect of camera performance and the A720 does very little to disappoint in that area. Its 8 megapixel sensor produces images with below average image noise. Below ISO 400, images are quite clean. Noise starts appearing at ISO 400 but is not significant until ISO 800 for bright subjects and ISO 400 for dark subjects. Compared to most non-Fuji compact cameras, the Canon A720 produces very clean ISO 400 results in good light. Higher ISO settings are quite noisy though and ISO 1600 should generally be avoided.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the Canon A650 IS camera, which has a 12.1 megapixel sensor and a 6x optical zoom with optical image stabilization.

“The noise at ISO 200 is disturbing. That boils down to the 12.1 megapixel sensor. Still, you have to consider that this is a 12-megapixel camera, and the printed results pretty much guarantee excellence up to ISO 400 at 8x10 (the practical maximum most people can print at home, and good quality in the ISO 800 to 1,600, both of which produce a fine 5x7 and 4x6, respectively. Add that better-than-ever quality to the Canon A650’s articulated LCD, fill flash control, and Custom modes, and you have a great camera for photo enthusiasts without breaking the bank.”

The Ricoh Caplio GX100 Creative Set is a new bundle for Ricoh’s professional zoom compact camera. It includes the camera, the exclusive electronic LCD viewfinder (VF-1), the wide angle converter 0.8x (DW-6), the lens hood with adapter (HA-2), the leather case (SC-45) and the strap (ST-2). The Ricoh GX100 Creative Set will be available at the end of February 2008, price to be announced.

DPReview have reviewed the Canon SD850 IS (also known as the IXUS 950 IS), an 8 megapixel digital camera with 4x zoom, image stabilized lens equivalent to 35-140mm.

“Minor quibbles aside, the SD 850 IS is hard to fault; it does exactly what’s expected of it and does it reliably and with a dash of style. It is fun to use, and I found myself carrying it around with me most of the time while I was working on this review. It is small and well built. It is responsive and easy to use and most importantly produces very good results for a camera in this class.”

The Ricoh R8 is a new 10 megapixel digital camera with a 7.1 wide-angle zoom lens. The R8 offers the Smooth Imaging EngineIII image processing engine, CCD-shift vibration correction, face recognition and 1cm macro mode. Other new features of the Ricoh R8 include a large 2.7-inch, 460,000-pixel HVGA LCD, 1:1 aspect square format function, and a complete redesign when compared to the previous R7 model. Available in silver or black and two tone, the Ricoh R8 will be available in March for £249.99.

The new Ricoh R50 is a 10 megapixel digital camera with a 5x zoom lens. With a compact body measuring 97.3(W)×56.3(H)×23.4(D) mm, the Ricoh R50’s 5x lens provides a focal range of 36-180mm. 15 different scene modes includes a sports function which captures the split-second movement of a fast-moving subject. Available in silver, the Ricoh R50 will be available in March 2008 at £149.99.

Sigma UK have today unveiled the price of the new Sigma DP1 compact camera. The DP1 will cost £549.99 in the UK, or £599.99 as a kit with the optical viewfinder. The Sigma DP1 will be available in the UK from April. Sigma US have set an MSRP of $999.99, although it’s already available for pre-order at Amazon for $800.

Amazon are now listing the Sigma DP1 compact camera for pre-order at $800, due to ship on March 25th. Just to re-cap, the new Sigma DP1 packs the full specification of a DSLR into the body of a compact camera, with a 14 megapixel sensor, support for RAW and JPEG formats, and a 28mm f/4 fixed-focal lens. The External Viewfinder is also available at $149, and the external flash for $70.

The Norcent DCS-1050 ia new 10 megapixel digital camera with Face Detection and Anti-Shake technology. The DCS-1050 also features a large 3”, scratch-resistant, TFT-panel color LCD display, 3x zoom lens, 22 scene modes and MPEG-4 video clips. The Norcent DCS-1050 has an estimated street price of $179.99.

Taiwanese ODM company Altek have demonstrated the World’s first digital camera with built-in GPS geotagging technology. Geo software company Geotate has provided its unique “Capture and Process” technology to Altek’s new camera. “With Geotate we have been able to design a state-of-the-art geotagging digital camera which allows the user to manage and share their digital content in a more intuitive way” said Martin Liu, spokeserson at Altek Corporation. “We are confident that it will be the next critical application in the DSC world.” We’re predicting that GPS will follow Face Detection as the must-have camera feature for 2008/9.

The AgfaPhoto DC-8330i is a new 8 megapixel digital camera featuring face detection and image stabilisation. The DC 8330i also offers a large 3 inch LCD monitor, 3x zoom lens (37.5 to 112.5mm) and the ability to set aperture and shutter speed manually. The AgfaPhoto DC-8330i is distributed in the USA through VistaQuest and will be available for $239.95.

The new Sigma DP1 packs the full specification of a DSLR into the body of a compact camera. The DP1 features a 14 megapixel FOVEON X3 direct image sensor (2652 × 1768 × 3 layers) as used in the Sigma SD14 digital SLR.
