This morning Photoxels have published their review of the tiny Canon PowerShot SD10 (also known as the Digital IXUS i in some countries). The SD10 has a street price of $349 in the USA and ?299 in the UK.
“Compared to a credit card, the PowerShot SD10 is just as wide (90.3 mm / 3.56 in.) but not quite as high (47.0 mm / 1.85 in.). It is 18.5 mm / 0.73 in. thin, and qualifies as being JeansPocket? Certified. There is no viewfinder and the 1.5 in. LCD is quite good at 78,000 pixels resolution. Surprisingly, you can even display a histogram when reviewing captured images. Battery life is excellent.”

CNET have reviewed the Toshiba PDR-M700, a 3.2 megapixel digital camera with a massive 10x Canon lens (37-370mm equivalent focal length range) and 2.5 inch LCD display.
“Handsomely designed in miniature SLR fashion, the Toshiba PDR-M700 means business. It boasts many desirable features for both advanced amateur shooters and multimedia types. Paramount among the attractions offered by Toshiba’s latest M-series cameras—of which the 700 is the higher-res, 3-megapixel version—are the 10X Canon zoom lens and supersize 2.5-inch LCD. The camera is competitively priced among the megazoom crop, and its gargantuan display makes it stand out from the crowd. But the M700’s so-so image quality dampens our enthusiasm.”

CNET have published their review of “the world’s smallest and lightest 2-megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom”, the Minolta DiMAGE X20.
“Looking for style on a budget? Consider this lower-cost addition to Konica Minolta’s deservedly popular Dimage X line. The 2-megapixel X20 lacks the deluxe finish and some of the design and performance virtues of its upper-crust cousins, but it retains several of their other strengths, including a 3X zoom lens and adjustable light sensitivity.”

Canon Japan have today said in a statement to Reuters that they plan to introduce no less than 20 new digital cameras during 2004, in a bid to capture 25% of the market. Canon anticipates shipping “at least” 12.5 million compact digital cameras in 2004, a jump of nearly 50 percent from the 8.5 million it estimates for the current year. Those figures do not include Digital SLR sales.
“Takashi Oshiyama, head of Canon’s digital imaging business group, told Reuters in an interview that his firm’s long history building cameras would give it the upper hand against its rivals, many of which have only been making cameras for a few years.
“We have a 67-year history making cameras and there is still lots of technology gathered over that time stored away in the shed,” Oshiyama said at Canon’s headquarters in Tokyo.”
I’m not exactly sure what Canon have locked away in the shed (!), but 2004 is certainly building up to be an exciting and eventful year for digital cameras.

A-Digital-Eye and DCResource have both just received a production version of the Sony DSC-F828, and rather than leaving us to wait until they have completed their full review, they have posted a number of sample shots. A few comments about the camera’s performance have also been published by A-Digital-Eye:
“We will say that the F828 does appear from all the shots we have now gone through to do a very impressive job with noise levels, including some very good sky shots with low noise all things considered. We did see some Purple fringing or Chromatic Aberrations in a few shots, but at this point it would be too early to say if the levels are anything unusual. We have many shots where there is no issue except the usual ones such as trying to get the perfect exposure or framing it just right.”

Steves Digicams is the second website today to post their review of the Nikon Coolpix 3700 digital camera. The Coolpix 3700 has a very different design from previous Coolpix models, with a brushed aluminium body that’s both slim and lightweight. The 3.2 megapixel 3700 features a 3x optical zoom that is equivalent to 35-105mm lens on a 35mm camera.
“Combining a 3.2-megapixel imager and a 3x Nikkor optical zoom lens into its stylish and durable all-metal body, Nikon has positioned the CoolPix 3700 as a worthy competitor in the miniature consumer digicam market. Its automatic exposure mode will produce good results for the point-n-shoot beginner, while the 15 Scene modes offer preprogrammed convenience for taking exposures of differing subjects or under demanding lighting conditions. Manual mode offers the intermediate user control of White Balance, Image Sharpening, and AF area, while providing for continuous shooting and Best Shot Selection; the user has no direct control of aperture, shutter speed, or ISO.”
